Day One with Zachary Harrison Kaplan

June 29, 2011

This is our first family photo with Zachary Harrison Kaplan. I will have many more stories to come of our adventures raising him. It has been one day and I have changed a number of diapers. I have become more comfortable holding him. And, I have been pee’ed on by my son. Today I am an adult.

A few notes from today:

  • When the nurses left us with Zachary when he was first born we sat there so confused. We were so excited but we had no idea what to do. The nurses also did not tell us when they would return and when they did I basically asked one of the nurses what we do with him (I doubt she gets that question too often from good new parents).
  • When Zachary was first born I kept staring at him as any father would do. What I noticed was he seemed to really be into having a tongue. I have never seen anyone seem so excited to play with their tongue.
  • As we planned the Bris I am against, I had a Mohel ask me a thousand and one questions when I inquired about using her. Here are two questions she asked, see if you can figure out which one I thought was inappropriate: 1) “Are both you and your wife Jewish?”; and 2) “Did your wife have a vaginal delivery?”
  • Every time my wife would try to nurse/feed our baby he would fall asleep. His survival skills are not good so far.
  • I am getting better and better at wrapping my baby up like a burrito which I guess should come natural since I am addicted to black beans (seriously, those who know me well know that eating black beans with burritos for dinner five nights a week is not unusual for me).
  • I have yet to figure out how to burp him properly and have only seen him successful burp when others were trying to do anything but burp him. I somehow thought burping would be one of the easier things to learn.
  • The Mets beat the Tigers 14-3 tonight, I guess they were excited that Zachary was finally born.
