We are trying to make our baby the Happiest Baby on the Block

July 22, 2011

When our baby is crying and unhappy is extremely stressful and flat out miserable. Sometimes it seems like it would take a miracle (more impressive than parting the Read Sea) to get our baby to stop crying and go to sleep. The other day I tried offering our baby $10,000 to go to sleep but I don’t think he can be bribed. That is why I am so happy that an acquaintance told me about “The Happiest Baby on the Block”. This is both a book and video by Dr. Harvey Karp about how to make your baby calm and happy. I am now an extreme believe in Dr. Karp’s theories and may even read the book or watch the video. I was going to get the video on Netflix but then Netflix stopped carrying it (screw you Netflix and your absurd price increase). Since we could not get the video (I guess we could have bought it) we watched clips of it from Youtube. The focus of Dr. Karp’s method is the 5 S’s:

An infant’s crying, which can last from minutes to hours, may actually be the result of missing the constant noise and stimulation of the womb, said Harvey Karp, MD, an associate professor of pediatrics at the University of California at Los Angeles Medical School. “This may be the solution to a 3,000-year-old medical mystery of what causes colic.”

A new system that involves the five S’s — swaddling, side/stomach positioning in the parents’ arms, shushing, swinging, and sucking — can calm most crying infants, Dr. Karp said. This activates the baby’s calming reflex during the first three to four months of life by mimicking experiences in the uterus.

I really cannot emphasize enough how awesome these methods have been since we started taking them seriously. Our baby, Zachary was having one of his extreme fits earlier tonight. I swaddled him tightly, shushed him and swayed him and he went from freaked out crying to trance like calmness amazingly fast. He was asleep in like 10 minutes and we were so happy. These methods will not work every time but I used them and have seen miracles happen greater than seeing the image of the Virgin Mary in a slice of toast. I would highly recommend reading articles and watching the Youtube videos on Dr. Karp’s methods. I would recommend the book and full length video but I haven’t read or watched them but I am sure they would be helpful.
