Our baby slept for almost 7 hours last night…which completely freaked us out

August 1, 2011

We put Zachary down last night sometime between 9:00 – 9:30PM. I was supposed to get the next feeding expected at around midnight. We woke up at 4AM this morning to hear Zachary just start to cry. We turned to each other and both said, “Did you get the last feeding? What do you mean you didn’t get the last feeding? Has he been asleep all this time?” It was flat out shocking. Zachary was completely fine and pulled off sleeping close to 7 hours last night. I was so freaked I searched on Google to see if it was safe for a 5 week old to sleep such a long stretch and I found a bunch of message boards where people asked the same question and the general response was that we should stop complaining as we have been blessed. It would be really amazing if this sleep cycle continues but I am guessing last night was a one time thing.

I must say I do wish we had a bat phone directly linking us to the pediatrician. We continually freak out about things and make ourselves even more crazy by looking things up on the internet. We were positive over the weekend that Zachary had acid reflux and we were ready for the pediatrician to pull out all the stops diagnosing him. We had emailed her over the weekend and had an appointment scheduled for today. She e-mailed back that it sounds like a mild case that it will probably go away on its own and we should just try to keep him upright after feedings. I don’t know why I expected her to helicopter in the paramedics to deal with our son’s acid reflux.

This is why I did not become a pediatrician.

You made a good call. We have had to make a real effort so far not to bother the crap out of our pediatrician and we are probably the more relaxed parents.
