You have such a cute baby, is it a boy or a girl?

October 4, 2011

My wife and I are probably biased when we say this but we have a beautiful baby boy. He is now 14 weeks old and absolutely adorable. The thing is that on a couple of occasions including this past weekend we have had a stranger complement us on how cute our baby is and then ask if we have a boy or a girl. I don’t understand this because our baby looks like a boy. There should be no confusion assuming you don’t read braille. Isn’t the blue blanket alone a dead give away? I understand that not every female baby looks like a girl especially when they don’t have hair but usually the parents overcompensate for this by putting the baby girl in frilly outfits or tying some type of pink ribbon or bow to the baby’s head. Doesn’t everyone understand that at the very least look for the pink or blue colors before asking if it is a boy or girl? What really blows my mind is why not at least guess? If you guess wrong maybe the parents are insulted but you have a 50% shot of being right. But, if you ask what the baby’s sex is than you have a 100% shot of being that stranger we dislike.

i think that this is just a lesson in how little people pay attention to/care about what they’re seeing. i have dressed Avery in pink dresses with bows since birth and still people ask me how old HE is. i actually responded once that HE was 8 months old and growing out of all of HIS dresses.

ha, yep people pay absolutely no attention. why even make the comment if you are going to pay no attention at all?

Oh, I can understand that. It can be very difficult to tell, especially if you’ve not had much to do with babies… and not everybody adheres to the pink/girl and blue/boy thing, either, so that’s not always a safe assumption to make! Expect to keep hearing that question for another six months or so! 😉

I guess I will just have to get used to it.
